Regina winters are brutal on garage doors. Cold snaps stiffen springs, contract metal, and freeze weather seals to the ground. This checklist keeps your door running smoothly from November through March.
Lubricate all moving parts
Use a silicone-based lubricant (never WD-40 as a lubricant) on springs, hinges, rollers, and the opener chain or screw. Do this before the first hard freeze.
Check and replace weather stripping
The bottom seal keeps snow, wind, and rodents out. If you can see daylight under the closed door, it’s time for a new seal.
Test the door balance
Disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway. If it doesn’t stay put, the springs need adjustment — cold weather makes an unbalanced door much worse.
Inspect the photo-eye sensors
Snow and frost can block the safety sensors. Wipe the lenses and make sure both indicator lights are steady.
Don’t forget the opener
Cold thickens old grease inside the opener. If your opener strains or hesitates on cold mornings, a pre-winter tune-up costs far less than a mid-January breakdown.
