A garage door shouldn’t wake the whole house. Rattles, squeals, and grinding each point to a different culprit — here’s how to diagnose the noise by sound alone.
Squealing or screeching
Dry rollers or hinges. Apply silicone garage door lubricant to every hinge pivot and roller stem. If your rollers are steel, upgrading to nylon rollers cuts noise dramatically.
Rattling and vibration
Loose hardware. With the door closed, snug every accessible nut and bolt on the track brackets and hinges. Rubber isolation pads between the opener and ceiling joists also help.
Grinding
Usually worn rollers dragging in the track, or a worn opener gear. Grinding deserves a professional look before something strips completely.
Banging or popping
Sections binding against each other or a spring beginning to fail. Popping on cold mornings is often just metal contracting, but consistent banging needs inspection.
The 10-minute quarterly routine
Lubricate, tighten, and listen. Ten minutes every three months keeps a door whisper-quiet for years — or book our maintenance plan and we’ll handle it for you.
